The polystyrene boxes (EPS) do a brilliant job of keeping the meat cool as well as being light in weight. They do not contain any CFCs or HCFCs and have a lower impact on the environment than many other packaging materials in their manufacturing. They can be reused and recycled, but the only drawback is that there are not many recyling points collecting them at the moment. Although you can use the boxes again, and when broken up they are useful to put in window boxes, pots and hanging baskets, they are not what you want taking up space in your garage and are not really worth retuning by post. The meat is kept cool with ice packs.

However we now (from October 2007) have an environmentally friendly alternative which is biodegradable, recyclable and compostable. The outer box is made from 100% biodegradable, recycled plain brown, corrugated fibreboard and insulated inside with felt wool liners. It is a new concept but using one of the oldest and most natural insulators - WOOL - from British hill sheep, washed and blended into insulation felt! The fleece felt provides exceptional insulating qualities, superior to most man-made insulating material, and unlike man-made insulation, the fleece felt is hygroscopic and works with the ice-packs to maintain cool temperatures. The meat is put inside a biodegradable bag for returning the liner to us with a freepost label. They need to be returned via Royal Mail, not the courier who delivers the meat. The cardboard can be taken to a recycling point. The problem is that the boxes and liners are hugely more expensive, so we have to charge a bit more, but think it is worthwhile.
