Our organic chickens at Higher Hacknell are truly tasty, and highly recommended.

They are reared in very small groups, even by Soil Association organic standards, of upto 250 and are encouraged to range widely and wildly around the fields! They love grazing and pecking at grass, especially in the morning and evening, which gives them a natural, slighlty yellow coloured skin.At night when we shut them in, away from the fox and other hungry predators, their mobile houses have plenty of space and comfortable straw bedding. As the daylight hours get longer,they make the most of the long summer evenings and we find ourselves having to stay up later and later in order to put them to bed!

Organic chickens live for a minimum of ten weeks which is up to twice as long as conventional and intensive chicken. They are reared under very high standards of welfare which ban routine in feed medication and antibiotics, and forbid practices such as beak and wing clipping.

Higher Hacknell Farm organic chickens have been highlighted by Rose Prince in the Weekend Telegraph as having "Exceptionally high Soil Association standards" and are also featured by Rick Stein. 2009 we achieved Highly Commended for our chickens at the Soil Association Organic Food Awards.
